Reading is a favourite activity in our home. Both my husby and I are avid readers and I knew that I wanted inspire a love of books in Miss M early.
As a new mom I was a bit clueless as to what types of books you could read to an infant. I had dreams of reading classics like Peter Rabbit and Winnie the Pooh, but I quickly learned that babies have very little interest in the ‘classics,‘ probably because of the lack of pictures and rhymes.
We started going to the local library and bookstore and would ‘test’ books out before deciding if that book for join our quickly growing library (partly because we were finding great books and partly because there are only so many times you can read the same book).
Soft Books (great for infants 0-6 month)
I was so excited when I discovered soft books! They are picture books that babies can easily hold and are great way for babies to participate in storytime. These books also have the added bonus of being amazing for tummy time!
The first soft book I would recommend is the LEKA Play book from Ikea, which is a great sensory book full of different sounds, textures and colours (and also very easy to wash).
Miss M also liked Wee Gallery’s Friendly Faces in the Yard. We often hung the book over her playmat and she would be entranced by the black and white contrast pictures.

Miss M’s Ongoing Favourites
So these are the books that Miss M will drag across the room for her dad and I to read (or in some cases sing) to her again and again (and again). I’m not quite sure what sets them apart from all the other books but I love to see my little get so excited for a book! I hope you will give them a try too.

I’m planning on making this post part of a series on books and literature for littles.
