Florence & Tuscany

April 5, 2018

After four amazing days in Rome (which you can check our here, if you haven’t already), we packed our bags and took the train north to the Tuscan city of Florence, home of the Duomo and Michelangelo’s David.

After the bustling street’s of Rome, Florence was like a breathe of calm air.

We walked the 15 minutes from the train station to our next B&B, Opera Bed & Breakfast located in the North part of the City.  We stopped for a quick nap before venturing out into the city.

Unlike Rome, Florence had a much more casual feel to it.  There seemed to be more families and local residents than tourists.

We didn’t have any destination in mind and really just explored before turning our attention to dinner.

Day 2 – Bike Tour into Tuscany

Day 2 in Florence we had scheduled a ‘full day’ bike tour into Tuscany with I Bike Italy. Now I say ‘full day’ because the tour included a 3 hour multi-course lunch and wine tasting at a private 11th century Chianti Villa Estate.

We ended up being the only couple of the tour and left Florence with our guide around 9:30, hopping in a van for a 30 drive into the country side to pick-up our bikes, which were literally stored in Villa’s shed along the way.  The tour also provided helmets and a re-usable water bottle. From there we biked the Tuscan countryside along olive groves, medieval castles (hello Machiavelli!), and hillside estates before stopping at our very own 11th century Chianti Villa for lunch. Lunch was an amazing 4 course meal including a fresh garden salad, breads with olive oil made at the Villa, traditional Tuscan bean dish and  of course, fresh pasta.  During the meal we also got to try a series of different wines made at the Villa.  Lunch was a leisurely affair, taking our time to enjoy before having to get back on our bikes to head back.

Day 3 – Doumo

Our last day in Florence, ended up being wet and rainy but that did not stop us from visiting the Doumo and San Lorenzo market (though it did start raining hard enough that I had to put away my camera at one point).
